Alabama gives Mitchell release from scholarship (Yahoo! Sports)

Alabama forward Tony Mitchell has left the team after ending his junior season on suspension, finishing a Crimson Tide career marked by crowd-pleasing dunks and sometimes inconsistent play. Tide coach Anthony Grant said Friday that Mitchell and reserve guard Charles Hankerson Jr. requested and received releases from their scholarships.

Report: Tarkanian recovering from ‘heart attack’ (Yahoo! Sports)

The Las Vegas Review-Journal is reporting that former UNLV basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian is hospitalized and recovering from a “mild heart attack.” Tarkanian’s daughter, Jodie Diamant, told the newspaper that her 81-year-old father was alert and joking after being moved into intensive care.

Kendall Marshall broke his right wrist when he fell on a play vs. Creighton.

The father of North Carolina point guard Kendall Marshall said Monday his son is recovering from surgery on his broken right wrist and it’s unclear if he’ll return for the NCAA regional games in St. Louis. Dennis Marshall said the procedure done in Chapel Hill, N.C., to insert a screw into his son’s wrist lasted about 35 minutes.

Calhoun could return from surgery soon (AP)

Connecticut Jim Calhoun is set to have back surgery Monday to help alleviate pain caused by narrowing of his spinal column, a procedure that he hopes could lead to his return to the court this season. Connecticut has not provided details about the surgery, but Calhoun said it is being performed after conventional therapy to treat his spinal stenosis failed.
