Louisville wins 2nd Big East championship (Yahoo! Sports)

Rick Pitino has coached 10 teams to conference tournament championships in his 27 seasons in college basketball. No. 10 seemed to be especially sweet. Playing tenacious defense throughout and mustering just enough offense to hold off a closing run, Louisville gave Pitino his latest title with a 50-44 victory over Cincinnati on Saturday night in the Big East championship game.

Seeking a quality win to improve its postseason resume, Seton Hall got picked off by Peyton Siva and stuffed by Gorgui Dieng. Siva had 14 points and six steals, Dieng blocked six shots inside and Louisville held off the Pirates 61-55 on Wednesday night to reach the Big East tournament quarterfinals, leaving Seton Hall to sweat out Selection Sunday as it hopes for an NCAA bid.

Brandon Triche scored 18 points, Dion Waiters had 13, and second-ranked Syracuse beat No. 19 Louisville 58-49 on Saturday to finish the season unbeaten at home.

C.J. Fair scored 13 points and No. 2 Syracuse scored the final six points of the game to beat No. 19 Louisville 52-51 on Monday night, snapping a seven-game losing streak against the Cardinals. Syracuse (26-1, 13-1 Big East) used an 8-0 run to take an eight-point lead, only to see Louisville (20-6, 8-5) rally with a 15-2 run of its own.

Louisville (20-5, 8-4 Big East) scored 13 of the game’s final 16 points to extend its winning streak to six games. Russ Smith had 16 points off the bench for the Cardinals.
