Pittsburgh freshman guard Isaiah Epps is leaving the program. Coach Jamie Dixon announced Wednesday that Epps is transferring for family-related reasons. The school has given Epps his full release and Dixon expects Epps to move closer to his hometown of Plainfield, N.J. Epps played in 19 games last season with two starts, scoring one basket.

Jim Calhoun returned to the bench after more than a month of medical leave and coached Connecticut to a 74-65 win over Pittsburgh on Saturday. Shabazz Napier scored 23 points, including a big 3-pointer with a minute left, and Roscoe Smith added 14 points and seven rebounds for the Huskies (18-12, 8-10 Big East) who kept alive hopes for an at-large bid to defend their NCAA national championship.

Herb Pope scored 19 points, including four free throws in final 10 seconds, and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Seton Hall to a 73-66 victory over Pittsburgh on Sunday. Freshman Aaron Cosby had a season-high 19 points for the Pirates (17-8, 6-7 Big East), who their second straight after a six-game losing streak.

Travon Woodall scored a career-high 29 points and Ashton Gibbs added 25 to lead Pittsburgh to a 79-70 win over Villanova on Sunday, its fourth straight win. The Panthers (15-9, 4-7 Big East) led by as many as 18 in the second half, though the Wildcats (10-13, 3-8 Big East) were able to trim that lead to three on a pair of Jayvaughn Pinkston free throws with 22.3 seconds left.

Jamie Dixon didn’t give up hope, not when Pittsburgh lost to Wagner. Not when Rutgers held the Panthers to all of 39 points. Not when the program’s longest losing streak in well over a decade sent it tumbling to the bottom of the Big East. The coach kept insisting the Panthers would be OK when they got healthy.

Pitt blows late lead, stunned by DePaul (AP)

Brandon Young scored 26 points, including a three-point play with 1.3 seconds left, as DePaul beat Pittsburgh 84-81 Thursday night. Young scored the game’s last seven points for the Blue Demons (10-4, 1-1 Big East) after Pitt (11-5, 0-3) held an 81-77 lead with 17.2 seconds remaining. Young’s layup cut the Panthers’ lead to two points; then Pitt’s Isaiah Epps missed two free throws.

Cincy beats No. 22 Pitt, 6-0 since brawl (AP)

Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin told anyone who would listen the Bearcats would go undefeated while senior forward and unquestioned team leader Yancy Gates served his six-game suspension for his role in an ugly brawl with crosstown rival Xavier three weeks ago. The statement was designed to inspire confidence in his decidedly undersized team.

Syracuse still No. 1, Pitt out of Top 25 (AP)

Laurent Rivard and Harvard have returned to the top 25 rankings.

Syracuse is No. 1 in The Associated Press’ Top 25 for a fourth straight week and Pittsburgh is out of the poll for the first time since the middle of 2009-10. The Orange received 60 first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel. Kentucky, which moved up one spot to second, got the other five.
