Connecticut Jim Calhoun is set to have back surgery Monday to help alleviate pain caused by narrowing of his spinal column, a procedure that he hopes could lead to his return to the court this season. Connecticut has not provided details about the surgery, but Calhoun said it is being performed after conventional therapy to treat his spinal stenosis failed.

Syracuse center Fab Melo has been reinstated and will play in the Orange’s road game against St. John’s on Saturday. The university made the announcement Thursday. Rutgers spoils Calhoun’s UConn return (AP)

Welcome back, Coach. Jim Calhoun’s return to the Connecticut bench following a three-game suspension was not a successful one as Rutgers beat the eighth-ranked Huskies 67-60 on Saturday night. The loss was the second straight for Connecticut and it came just four days after the Huskies also lost in New Jersey, falling to Seton Hall.
